Sinn Féin calls for removal of carbon tax on heating oil

Sinn Féin has tabled a motion in the Dáil calling for the complete removal of the carbon tax on home heating oil to address rising energy costs. Pearse Doherty, the party's Finance Spokesperson, argued that recent budget measures, including a €43 reduction on a 1,000-litre fill, have been negated by market volatility. Doherty noted that suppliers saw prices jump by €150 immediately following the budget announcement, with some families facing increases of up to €700.

During debates in the Dáil, Junior Finance Minister Robert Troy defended the carbon tax, citing its role in funding various government initiatives. The clash highlighted growing political tension regarding the cost of living and the effectiveness of current fiscal policies in protecting households from heating oil price spikes.
