Sinop fisherman survives close encounter with jaguar

A fisherman, 54-year-old Augustinho Pereira Leite, experienced a close encounter with a jaguar during a night fishing trip on the Teles Pires River in Sinop, Mato Grosso.

While fishing alone on a Monday night, Leite noticed the feline near a trail. As he prepared to leave, the jaguar approached within approximately two meters and lunged toward him. Leite reported that he stood his ground, making noise and stomping his feet, which eventually caused the animal to retreat into the forest. Despite the encounter, Leite was not injured. He noted that while he has seen jaguars in the region before, they were always at a much greater distance.
