Sinop mosque construction dispute involves land ownership claims

A dispute has emerged in Sinop regarding the construction of a mosque in a neighborhood recently connected to Bektaşağa village following a 2024 Presidential approval. Retired teacher Ramazan Yıldırım, who has been campaigning for the mosque for a year, claims that the project is being blocked by administrative and legal hurdles.

Yıldırım alleges that the land, an 887-square-meter plot approved by the governorate's site selection commission, is being contested because it is still registered under the legal entity of the former Kızılcaot village. To fund the project, Yıldırım stated he sold his own apartment and has already purchased building materials.

Hayrettin Ergün, the Headman of Kızılcaot Village, opposes the construction, asserting that the land belongs to the Kızılcaot village legal entity. Ergün also noted that a prayer room (mescit) is located approximately 300 meters from the proposed site, making a new mosque unnecessary according to his position.
