Turkey fishing season to resume September 1

The new fishing season in Turkey is set to begin on September 1 for the Black Sea, Marmara, and Aegean seas, following the end of the general fishing ban that started on April 15. In the Mediterranean, restrictions for purse seine and trawl fishing will continue until September 15.

Fishermen are currently engaged in intensive preparations, including engine maintenance, deck repairs, and net mending at various ports such as Rumeli Feneri. Industry experts and fishermen express high optimism for the upcoming season, particularly regarding palamut (bonito) stocks. Reports suggest that high survival rates of bonito larvae in the Black Sea could lead to an abundant supply, potentially lowering consumer prices.

While palamut is expected to be the standout species, other regional expectations include anchovy and horse mackerel in the Black Sea, sardines in the Aegean, and various species in the Mediterranean. Authorities in Sinop have also held meetings to ensure that the new season is conducted sustainably and in compliance with maritime regulations to protect aquatic resources.
