Sinop population surpasses 231,000 residents

The population of Sinop, Mato Grosso, has surpassed 231,000 residents according to new estimates from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The 2026 data shows a population of 231,452, marking a 3.4% increase of 7,672 inhabitants compared to 2025.

Over the last decade, the city has experienced significant expansion, growing 74.11% from a population of 132,934 in 2016. Sinop is currently the fourth most populous city in Mato Grosso, following Cuiabá, Várzea Grande, and Rondonópolis. It also recorded the highest absolute growth among the state's largest cities between 2025 and 2026.

Mayor Roberto Dorner attributed this growth to economic development and investments in infrastructure, urban planning, mobility, health, education, and job creation. He stated that the increase demonstrates Sinop's ability to attract residents, businesses, and new investments, strengthening its role as a regional hub.
