A major riot and mass escape occurred at a migrant detention facility in Sintiki, Serres, on the night of Saturday, August 22, 2026. A group of migrants, primarily of Bangladeshi and Egyptian nationality, attacked police forces with stones and other objects, causing extensive damage to the facility. The unrest resulted in the destruction of an entire wing of the structure, as well as damage to housing units, common areas, security cameras, fire equipment, and official police vehicles.

During the chaos, detainees cut through the facility's perimeter fencing to facilitate an escape. Authorities report that approximately 40 to 41 individuals managed to flee the center. Following a large-scale police operation involving reinforcements from Thessaloniki, approximately 27 individuals have been arrested, while searches continue for the remaining fugitives.

Five migrants were injured during the clashes. Three were treated and returned to the facility, while two remain hospitalized at Serres General Hospital. In response to the incident, the Municipality of Sintiki has passed an emergency resolution demanding the permanent closure of the facility, citing severe security concerns for local residents and workers.
