Sintiki Municipality demands immediate closure of Kleidi facility

The Municipal Council of Sintiki has passed a resolution with a large majority demanding the immediate closure of the Closed Controlled Access Center in Kleidi. The decision follows serious incidents that occurred on the night of Saturday, August 22, 2026.

According to the council, the unrest involved stone-throwing and attacks against police forces, extensive damage to facilities, destruction of parts of the perimeter fencing, and the escape of residents from the structure. The municipality stated that these events confirm that the continued operation of the facility creates severe security issues for the local community, workers, and law enforcement.

The resolution has been addressed to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Migration and Asylum, the Minister of Citizen Protection, and other regional authorities, requesting a specific timeline for the facility's closure.
