Sintra authorities uncover illegal elderly care facility with allegations of abuse
Authorities have uncovered evidence of serious elder abuse and significant public health risks at an unlicensed residential facility for the elderly in Belas, Sintra. An inspection conducted by the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) and other local entities revealed that residents were being isolated in rooms and immobilized in inadequate chairs using sheets to restrict movement. Management reportedly justified these actions as security measures.
Investigators found severe safety and freedom of movement concerns, noting that some bedroom doors lacked handles on both the interior and exterior. Instead, doors were opened using a removable device held by staff, leading to suspicions that residents were being confined at night.
The facility also exhibited grave failures in medical care and hygiene. Authorities discovered medications being stored in refrigerators used for food, and noted the absence of a nursing station. Furthermore, staff members lacked the necessary training to provide proper care. The case has been referred to the Ministério Público for further investigation.
