Sioux Falls building activity slows in third quarter

Building activity in Sioux Falls slowed in September, according to city permit data. New permits issued for the month totaled just over $90 million, contributing to a third-quarter total of $796.9 million. This figure is a decrease from the $1 billion recorded during the same period last year.

City officials noted that while apartment construction remains strong, new residential construction has slowed. Total residential construction through September reached $137.1 million, down from $177.6 million in the previous year. Specifically, townhome construction saw a significant decline, with 151 new units compared to 328 in the prior year. However, multifamily units have seen growth, with 1,738 permits issued so far this year.

Commercial construction also lagged behind last year's figures, totaling $385.4 million compared to $516.2 million a year ago. Notable recent permits include a $17.9 million addition for welding and advanced manufacturing at Southeast Technical College and a multifamily project for 95 senior living units at Emra Sioux Falls.
