SIP Journalism Award honors Ecatepec documentary as Argentina poverty rises

The Inter-American Press Association (SIP) has awarded the 2026 Journalism Excellence Award in the university journalism category to the short documentary ‘Arena del Valle: La lucha libre como escape y sueño en Ecatepec’. Produced by David Gerardo Martínez, the work explores a wrestling school in Granjas Valle de Guadalupe, Ecatepec, depicting how lucha libre serves as a source of identity, discipline, and hope for local youth.

In Argentina, recent data from Indec indicates a poverty rate of 32.3%, a figure that exceeded pessimistic private projections. Critics argue that methodological inconsistencies may hide an additional 20 percentage points of poverty. Economists have noted that current economic adjustments lack historical evidence of leading to subsequent growth, questioning the social and economic outlook under the current administration.
