Sipa Durik summit reached by first female climbers
A five-person mountaineering team has successfully reached the summit of Sipa Durik, a 4,123-meter peak located in the Hakkari province. The expedition included Nursel Ölmez and Gülnur Bağcı, who became the first women to successfully climb the mountain, which is considered one of Turkey’s most dangerous peaks due to its steep terrain and snow-covered conditions.
During the ascent, the team discovered a historical summit logbook dating back to 1973. Although the document had been significantly damaged by weather conditions over the decades, it contained notes regarding previous climbers and their camp altitudes.
The climb also served as a tribute to Yüksel Işık, a climber from Bursa who lost his life after disappearing during a solo attempt on the mountain last year. The successful team returned safely on August 26 following a period of challenging physical and technical conditions.
