Siponto archaeologists discover medieval cemetery with mother and child
Archaeologists from the Universities of Bari and Foggia have discovered a medieval cemetery in Siponto, Italy, dating to the 12th and 13th centuries. The find was made during a three-week excavation campaign in the port area of Siponto, near Manfredonia.
The excavation revealed a 30-meter-long masonry structure containing the remains of approximately 30 individuals. Among the burials, researchers identified a notable grave of a woman, estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old, who was found holding her child, a boy estimated to be 4 to 5 years old.
Project ArcheoSipontum researchers plan to conduct extensive anthropological and bone analyses to determine the child's sex and provide more precise dating. Further excavations are planned to investigate the potential presence of a place of worship at the site.
