Sir Alex Ferguson discusses dementia fears and health recovery
Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary former Manchester United manager, has opened up in a rare interview about his health concerns and his fear of dementia. The 84-year-old expressed anxiety regarding cognitive decline, noting that his history of frequent heading the ball during his football career is a potential contributing factor.
Ferguson’s concerns are personal, as his brother, Martin, is currently battling the disease. To support him, the former manager purchased a home in Glasgow to be closer to his brother and has donated £100,000 to the ‘Playlist for Life’ program, which uses music to help dementia patients trigger memories.
Reflecting on his own medical history, Ferguson discussed his recovery from a severe brain hemorrhage in 2018. At the time, doctors gave him only a 20% chance of survival. He detailed the intense rehabilitation process required to regain his speech, which involved daily exercises such as writing down lists of animals and rivers to stimulate vocal memory. Despite these past health challenges, Ferguson remains an active presence at Old Trafford, continuing to follow Manchester United closely.
