Sir Chris Hoy says his terminal cancer deadline has moved forward

Olympic cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy, 47, revealed that his stage‑4 prostate cancer diagnosis – first identified in September 2023 after a routine shoulder‑sprain check‑up – has spread to his bones and doctors have given him an estimated two‑to‑four‑year life expectancy. In a recent interview he said his “deadline has been brought forward” and reflected that everyone’s time is finite.

Despite ongoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy and heavy medication, Hoy has continued intensive training, completing a week‑long coast‑to‑coast cycling challenge across Spain, averaging about six and a half hours of riding each day. He estimates his fitness is only about 20 % lower than before his illness and noted that early doctors had suggested he “stop doing these silly things and just lie down.”

Hoy also spoke about public reactions, saying: “They come up to me and are sort of sympathetic… We only have a set amount of time, everybody. It’s just that my deadline’s been brought forward a little bit.” His wife, Lady Sarra Hoy, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis shortly before his cancer diagnosis.
