Sir Garfield Sobers' State Funeral Triggers Citywide Road Closures in Bridgetown

Barbados held a state funeral for cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers on 29 July 2026 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. The ceremony, a national thanksgiving service, was attended by prominent West Indies figures including Sir Clive Lloyd and former captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, as well as a delegation from the Guyana Cricket Board led by President Bissoondyal Singh.

Barbados Police Service officials announced extensive road closures and traffic diversions from early morning until mid‑afternoon to accommodate the funeral procession. Streets such as Lower Bay Street, River Road, Bridge Road, St Michael’s Row and others were temporarily blocked, and drivers were urged to plan alternate routes and cooperate with police directions. The police also asked nearby businesses to adjust delivery schedules to minimise disruption.
