Sir Geoffrey Cox faces mock trial over mining legal work

Green activists in the Torridge and Tavistock constituency are organizing a ‘mock trial’ in Tavistock to protest the professional activities of Conservative MP Sir Geoffrey Cox KC.

Sir Geoffrey is currently representing West Cumbria Mining in a civil action against the British government. The mining company, owned by Singapore-based Woodhouse Investment, is seeking up to £300 million in lost profits after the government revoked permission for a major coal mining project in Cumbria. The High Court previously ruled against the mining plans in 2024, citing unaddressed climate damage.

The ‘Stop Geoffrey Cox’ campaign alleges a clear conflict of interest between his role as a Member of Parliament and his work as a barrister representing a fossil fuel interest against the state. The activists intend to use the demonstration to inform constituents of his involvement in the legal proceedings.
