Jim Ratcliffe warns UK is “on the slide” due to taxes and immigration

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the billionaire founder of Ineos and co-owner of Manchester United, has warned that the United Kingdom is “on the slide.” In a series of interviews, Ratcliffe attributed the country's perceived decline to high taxation, excessive welfare spending, and high immigration levels. He further criticized the government's energy policies, specifically the lack of investment in North Sea oil and gas, warning that low gas storage could lead to supply shortages during winter cold snaps.

Ratcliffe, who has been a tax resident of Monaco since 2020, argued that the UK has developed a “green eye towards wealth,” which he claims is driving successful entrepreneurs and wealth creators out of the country. He contrasted this with the United States, where he stated wealth creators are applauded.

UK government officials have responded to these criticisms. Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson defended the economy, stating it is in a “strong position” ahead of the upcoming Budget. Phillipson suggested that Ratcliffe's perspective should be taken “with a pinch of salt” due to his status as a tax exile. The government also maintained confidence in the nation's energy security and emphasized its commitment to driving economic growth.
