Siracusa architecture students protest classroom shortages
Architecture students in Siracusa have staged spontaneous protests due to a critical shortage of classrooms. The shortage stems from the closure of the ex-Abela barracks in Ortigia, which serves as the primary campus, for extensive renovation works intended to modernize the historic building.
While the renovation project aims to create a functional university site, it is expected to continue for at least another year. Currently, students have been relocated to two other sites in the historic center, but these spaces have proven insufficient for the higher-than-expected student enrollment.
Matteo Ignaccolo, the president of the teaching structure and delegate for the Rector of the University of Catania, has conducted inspections of municipal and ecclesiastical properties to find suitable alternative spaces. Local councilors have also formally questioned the mayor regarding the administration's plan to provide adequate study areas and have called for a long-term university development project for the city.
