Siracusa prison riot leaves 11 officers injured
A violent riot erupted at the Cavadonna prison in Siracusa, resulting in injuries to 11 prison police officers. The unrest began when a group of foreign detainees, who were awaiting transfer, forced their way through courtyard fences and climbed onto the facility's roofs.
From the rooftops, inmates threw stones, debris, and pieces of metal bars—stripped from photovoltaic panels—at responding officers. The situation escalated to the point where some officers reportedly had to jump from the roof to escape the assault. The violence also included an incident where inmates set fire to vegetation near their cells, which spread to an external boiler.
Prison unions, including OSAPP and Cnpp-Spp, have denounced the event as a sign of a collapsing penitentiary system. They cited chronic staff shortages, overcrowding, and inadequate security protocols as primary drivers of the instability. In response to the riot, reinforcements were called in from other facilities, and a perimeter security presence was established by the Carabinieri, State Police, and Guardia di Finanza to prevent escapes.
