Siracusa City Council halts sale of Central Library
The Siracusa City Council has approved an amendment to the Single Programming Document (Dup) that prevents the sale of the Central Library located on via Santi Coronati until an adequate alternative location is identified. The decision aims to protect the city's literary heritage and prevent the fragmentation of cultural services.
Paolo Cavallaro, the leader of the Fratelli d'Italia group, hailed the move as a ‘victory of common sense.’ He emphasized that the city must first secure a modern, functional structure—potentially outside of Ortigia—before discussing the future of the current building.
In addition to the library protections, the Council approved funding for the renovation of the Grottasanta Library building on via Barresi and a municipal building on via Vermexio. The latter is intended to house municipal offices and digital library consultation stations.
