Siracusa City Council Vice President arrested in corruption probe

The Vice President of the Siracusa City Council, Concetta Carbone, has been placed under house arrest as part of the Nexus investigation. Coordinated by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) in Palermo, the probe targets a suspected system of rigged public contracts in the Syracuse area.

Carbone, who previously served as an assessor in the administration of Mayor Francesco Italia, faces charges of corruption and criminal association. Investigators allege that Carbone, along with a municipal technician and a member of the Carabinieri, facilitated preferential channels for certain entrepreneurs to secure public contracts through direct awards. In exchange, it is hypothesized that they received approximately 10,000 euros and various electoral advantages.

The investigation initially focused on works related to the expansion of a migrant hostel in Cassibile but has since broadened to include other public procurement procedures. The alleged scheme reportedly utilized public contracts not only for infrastructure and services but also to consolidate personal relationships and political support, aided by a lack of oversight from the City Council during a period when it was dissolved.
