Siracusa: Corruption investigation prompts calls for mayor's resignation
Giancarlo Garozzo, a regional executive member of Italia Viva – Casa Riformista Sicilia and former mayor of Siracusa, has called for the current mayor of Siracusa to resign following a corruption investigation.
Garozzo stated that the allegations emerging from the investigation into the Syracuse municipality are of “unprecedented gravity” and have caused deep indignation among citizens. He criticized the mayor’s response to requests for transparency, labeling a brief social media video as insufficient.
Garozzo argued that the administration faces a crisis of ethical and political responsibility. He noted that if the mayor was aware of the alleged corruption, he failed significantly in his oversight; if he was unaware, the situation is even more serious as the investigation involves a close and trusted associate. He described the municipality as having become a context for “clientelism and business,” allegedly used as an electoral “ATM.”
