Siracusa Mayor Francesco Italia faces no-confidence motion
Fourteen city councilors in Siracusa have filed a motion of no-confidence against Mayor Francesco Italia. The signatories represent a broad coalition, including members from Forza Italia, the Democratic Party (PD), Fratelli d’Italia, and the mixed group. To pass, the motion requires at least 20 favorable votes out of 32 council members.
The motion cites several grievances, most notably the Mayor's failure to resign following the Nexus operation, an investigation coordinated by the European Public Prosecutor's Office regarding alleged systemic irregularities within the municipality. Councilors have described the Mayor as “absolutely inadequate” for his lack of transparency regarding the probe, which they claim has damaged the city's image.
Additional criticisms include mismanagement of urban planning, waste management, water emergencies, and tourist taxes. The political fallout has sparked intense friction within the center-right coalition. Fratelli d’Italia deputy Luca Cannata has pressured Grande Sicilia and the MPA to clarify whether they will support the no-confidence motion or continue to uphold the current administration, accusing them of political inconsistency.
