Siracusa official calls for school neutrality and expert-led student welfare

Ivan Scimonelli, leader of the ‘Insieme’ council group, has called for schools to remain neutral environments for growth and learning, free from political instrumentalization. He emphasizes that educational institutions should not be used as platforms for personal or political promotion, particularly as election periods approach.

Scimonelli highlights the need to address the excessive use of smartphones and tablets among minors. He argues that discussions regarding the impact of technology on sleep, concentration, and social development should be led by qualified professionals—such as psychologists, pediatricians, and child neuropsychiatrists—rather than individuals who may use these technical sessions to gain political visibility. The goal is to ensure that school initiatives remain transparent, pluralistic, and focused solely on the interests of students and their families.
