Siracusa political debate intensifies over parking privatization
Political debate is intensifying in Siracusa regarding the proposed outsourcing of parking and blue line management to private entities.
Fratelli d'Italia has expressed strong opposition to the use of project financing for these services, instead proposing the creation of an entirely public company. Local coordinator Paolo Romano argued that parking revenues should remain a municipal resource to fund public services and improve urban mobility, warning that private management could lead to higher tariffs and reduced availability for residents.
The Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) has also called for greater transparency from Mayor Francesco Italia. The group questioned the administration's decision to relinquish significant municipal income, noting that revenues from parking have grown from 1.7 million euros in 2019 to nearly 4 million euros in 2024. M5S highlighted that while revenues have surged, management and maintenance costs were reported at approximately 100,000 euros. The controversy follows a project financing proposal submitted in April 2026 by City Green Light Spa.
