Siracusa sports facility name error attributed to AI photo editing

A new indoor sports facility in the Pizzuta district of Siracusa, Italy, became the subject of social media scrutiny following a perceived spelling error on its facade. Initial posts by Mayor Francesco Italia appeared to show the building labeled ‘PALAINDOOM’ instead of ‘PALAINDOOR’.

Investigations revealed that the error was not a physical mistake on the building itself, but rather a digital artifact. The photograph shared on social media had been processed using artificial intelligence to remove construction debris, such as waste bins, from the image. During this AI-driven reconstruction, the letter ‘R’ in the vertical signage was inadvertently transformed into an ‘M’.

The multi-purpose facility, covering approximately 2,450 square meters, is designed for athletics and gymnastics. The project, costing nearly 3.9 million euros, was funded through a combination of PNRR funds, loans from the Istituto per il Credito Sportivo, and municipal resources.
