Siracusa water crisis and emissions spark political clash

Residents of Siracusa have been left without water in several neighbourhoods as supply problems worsen ahead of the summer tourist season. The local Democratic Party denounced the centre‑right regional administration for focusing on internal disputes instead of solving the emergency, and it secured a municipal motion to compensate affected citizens and to waive the tourist‑tax for harmed accommodation businesses.

At the same time, the petrochemical complex around Priolo, Melilli, Augusta and parts of Siracusa has generated persistent foul odours and elevated levels of benzene, non‑methane hydrocarbons and hydrogen sulphide, raising health concerns. Senator Dafne Musolino (Italia Viva) called on the national government for immediate intervention, demanding clear answers on the source of the emissions, rapid investigations, and strengthened monitoring. Regional President Renato Schifani awaits an ARPA report, while local authorities plan an operational meeting with the prefecture to assess emergency measures.
