Siruvani Dam water supply reduced due to weak monsoon

A weak southwest monsoon has led to a reduction in drinking water supply for Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, as water levels in the Siruvani Dam decline. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) has reduced the daily supply from approximately 65 million liters per day (MLD) to 55 MLD.

Officials report that the catchment area in Kerala required between 50 mm and 100 mm of rainfall to significantly boost reservoir levels, but only 7 mm to 8 mm has been recorded during the current monsoon season. As of Saturday, the dam's water level stood at 26.7 feet, well below its 50-foot capacity.

To address the shortage and prevent further loss, the Tamil Nadu and Kerala governments are collaborating on repair and maintenance plans for the dam to stop leaks. The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has paid approximately 11 crore rupees in arrears to the TWAD board and has submitted a proposal for an 18 crore rupee project to the Tamil Nadu government for reservoir repairs.
