Terme Jodno project halted after hazardous waste discovery in Sisak
Construction of the Terme Jodno spa project in Sisak has been halted following the discovery of suspected hazardous waste, including reports of mercury, at the site. Authorities, including the State Inspectorate and the State Attorney's Office, are conducting investigations to determine the nature and toxicity of the material, which is believed to have been deposited decades ago.
Sisačko-moslavačka County Prefect Ivan Celjak stated that the county will proceed with the project once official investigation results are received and necessary remediation is completed. He emphasized that geomechanical testing was conducted to ensure soil stability, but such tests are not designed to detect buried waste. The project aims to modernize the existing iodine spa facility.
Separately, remediation efforts are underway at the former PPK site in Gospić. Mirko Budiša, Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, reported that the third phase of remediation is progressing according to plan. This includes the temporary covering of eco-toxic waste and the planned removal of approximately 4,500 tons of scattered waste, pending government approval for funding.
