Sisak commemoration honors children killed in WWII-era camps

The Serbian National Council (SNV) organized a commemoration in Diana Budisavljević Park in Sisak to honor children who died in the wartime camp system of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) in 1942. The event included a memorial service for the youngest victims.

Historian Mario Šimunković stated that the suffering of children in Sisak was a direct consequence of the NDH regime's policies, which involved the persecution and mass killing of Serbs, Jews, and Roma. He noted that children were kept in facilities lacking basic living conditions, suffering from hunger, cold, and disease. Historical documents cited by Šimunković record 1,152 deaths among the children held there.

Some perspectives presented at the event challenged historical revisionism. While organizers and historians described the site as a camp where children were victims of state policy, other historical research, such as that by Vlatka Vukelić, characterizes the facility as a children's shelter or reception center. Vukelić argues there is no documented evidence of organized killing or torture, attributing the high mortality rate to catastrophic wartime and epidemiological conditions rather than intentional extermination.
