Sises curves on BOAK highway: Safety group demands permanent dividers

The Panhellenic Association ‘SOS Traffic Crimes’ is calling for urgent safety measures at the Sises curves on the BOAK highway in Crete. The association highlights a specific stretch of road, less than two kilometers long, that has become a site of frequent and fatal accidents.

According to data provided by the association, at least 13 collisions have occurred at this location between 1999 and 2024, resulting in 23 deaths. Nine of these incidents were head-on collisions. To prevent further loss of life, the group is proposing the installation of permanent concrete or metal dividers to prevent vehicles from entering the opposing lane of traffic, rather than relying on temporary plastic bollards.

The association notes that while some plastic safety measures have been implemented on other parts of the BOAK, this high-risk area remains without substantial intervention despite its history of severe accidents.
