Siset expert advises against alarmism regarding thrombosis risk in women

Elvira Grandone, Vice President and President-elect of the Italian Society for the Study of Hemostasis and Thrombosis (Siset), has urged against creating unnecessary alarm regarding thrombosis risks in women. Speaking at the XXIX National Congress of Siset, Grandone addressed concerns related to pregnancy, the postpartum period, and the use of contraceptive pills.

Grandone emphasized that the risk associated with hormonal medications, particularly those based on estroprogestins, is modest. She noted that these drugs are essential for both contraception and treating various conditions that affect female fertility. She stated that international scientific societies are aligned on the fact that the absolute risk remains low.

The expert called for a more personalized, “tailored” approach to therapy to better identify women who require specific attention. Additionally, Grandone highlighted the need for increased awareness and recognition of thromboembolic and hemorrhagic pathologies, noting that these conditions are often under-recognized due to their rarity or a lack of representation in scientific literature.
