Sisters of the Holy Union maintain medical services in rural Cameroon
In the village of Baba 1, located in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, the Sisters of the Holy Union continue to provide essential medical services despite the ongoing Anglophone crisis. Operating out of the St. Monica Catholic Medical Center, the congregation serves a remote community facing extreme poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to electricity and safe drinking water.
The mission faces significant challenges, including severe staff shortages. According to reports from Vatican News, recruiting qualified professionals is difficult because few are willing to work in such a precarious environment, and those who are willing often require salaries that the local community cannot afford.
Beyond medical care, the community struggles with child malnutrition and food insecurity. While the sisters have previously implemented agricultural and nutritional initiatives to support women and children, many of these programs have been disrupted by local violence. The sisters remain one of the few religious communities providing a social safety net in this specific area.
