Sit-to-stand test assesses lower-body strength and aging
The 30-second sit-to-stand test is a functional assessment used to measure lower-body strength, endurance, balance, and coordination. By counting how many times a person can rise from and sit back down in a chair without using their arms, the test serves as a biomarker for biological aging and physical health.
Healthcare professionals and organizations, such as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, utilize this test to assess fall risks, particularly in adults aged 60 and older. Low scores may indicate sarcopenia, increased cardiovascular risk, or a higher likelihood of falls. While primarily used for geriatric screening, the test can also be used by younger individuals to monitor functional fitness and muscle strength in the thighs, hips, and core.
