Sitiveni Rabuka calls for independent journalism at Pacific Media Summit

Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called for “Constructive Pacific Journalism” during the opening of the 8th Pacific Media Summit in Savusavu. Addressing media professionals from across the region, Rabuka emphasized that constructive journalism should not diminish government scrutiny. Instead, he argued that journalists must remain independent, fearless, and questioning to strengthen democracy and connect Pacific communities.

Rabuka highlighted the importance of holding institutions accountable and exposing corruption or abuses of power. He noted that his government’s repeal of Fiji’s Media Industry Development Act was intended to support a free media environment. Additionally, he mentioned the expansion of the Public Service Broadcasting Grant to support a more pluralistic and resilient media sector.

Addressing modern challenges, the Prime Minister warned against the rise of misinformation, disinformation, and the impact of artificial intelligence. He urged newsrooms to maintain disciplined verification methods and rigorous fact-checking to combat the rapid spread of false information and declining public trust in media.
