Sivagnanam Sridharan calls for international probe into Semmani mass graves

A delegation led by Tamil National Alliance Member of Parliament Sivagnanam Sridharan met with high-ranking Canadian Foreign Affairs officials in Ottawa to demand an independent international forensic investigation into the Semmani mass graves in Sri Lanka. During the meeting, Sridharan presented documents to officials, including Assistant Deputy Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Weldon E. F., and Deputy Director for Sri Lanka relations, Deidre Yuich.

Sridharan highlighted that 583 sets of human remains have been discovered during excavations at the Semmani site. He emphasized the necessity of international expertise to uncover the truth behind these findings. The delegation also raised concerns regarding ongoing human rights violations in Sri Lanka, including enforced disappearances, land occupations, and the denial of memorial rights for the Tamil people.

Specific requests were made for the return of ancestral lands currently under military control, including 171 acres in Keppilavu, Mullaitivu, and 2,117 acres in Valikamam North, Jaffna. The group urged Canada to continue its diplomatic engagement through international human rights mechanisms to ensure justice and accountability for the affected communities.
