Sivakasi firecracker units face production dip amid labour shortages

Firecracker manufacturers in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, are increasing operations to meet Diwali demand, despite facing a reported 25 per cent drop in production compared to last year.

Industry workers and managers attribute the decline to significant labour shortages and regulatory restrictions, such as requirements for ‘green crackers’. At Udhayraj Fireworks, management noted that the workforce has decreased from approximately 100–120 employees to around 70–75 due to competition from nearby factories.

The slowdown is impacting the livelihoods of local families who depend almost exclusively on the industry for income. Workers have expressed concerns that the reduced pace of production affects their ability to cover essential household expenses, including food and education.
