Sivas experiences rising demand for wool quilts as temperatures drop
As night temperatures drop in Sivas, one of Turkey's coldest provinces, demand for traditional wool quilts has increased. Residents are turning to wool for its ability to regulate body temperature and prevent sweating.
Local artisan Aysel Ateş, who has practiced the craft for 20 years, describes the intensive 4-to-5-day preparation process. This involves soaking the wool in soda and softener, beating it to remove water, drying, fluffing, and finally sewing. Ateş notes that while she previously produced three to four quilts a day, she now completes one per day.
Wool is highly sought after by those with rheumatism, back, and knee pain due to its natural properties. Ateş also mentioned that customers for her work include individuals from other cities and abroad, and she expressed a preference for wool over synthetic fiber alternatives.
