Sivasspor commemorates 43 fans lost in 1967 Kayseri tragedy

Sivasspor officials and former players held a memorial service to commemorate the 59th anniversary of a tragic incident in Kayseri. On September 17, 1967, during a 2. Lig White Group match between Kayserispor and Sivasspor, violent events in the stands resulted in the deaths of 43 supporters.

A delegation including Sivasspor Vice President Ahmet Fatih Korkmaz, Board Member Gürkan Sönmez, and Technical Director İsmet Taşdemir visited the Yukarı Tekke Cemetery to pray at the graves of the deceased fans and former club president Osman Seçilmiş.

Former Sivasspor player Selahattin Elbay, who participated in the ceremony, described the match as a “black stain on the history of world football.” He emphasized the importance of preventing violence in sports and noted that while legislation like the 2011 Law on the Prevention of Violence in Sports has helped, the pursuit of sportsmanship and gentlemanship remains a primary goal for the club and the football community.
