Sivri wildfire: Two DEDDIE contractors present themselves to prosecutor
Two contractors for the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDIE) voluntarily presented themselves to the Polygyros prosecutor following a major wildfire in Sivri, Halkidiki. The individuals were released pending the completion of the investigation and the submission of the official file by the Fire Service.
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was ignited when a tree fell onto low-voltage power lines. High winds, reaching 8 Beaufort, caused the wires to spark and ignite dry vegetation, allowing the blaze to spread rapidly. The fire affected approximately 3,500 acres, representing about 1% of the Kassandra peninsula.
The destruction includes eight houses and several vehicles. Additionally, the biological treatment plant in Sivri was completely destroyed, along with other local infrastructure. The fire reached the settlements of Fourka and Sivri, leaving significant damage to the local pine forests.
