AK‑47 firing Siwan Bihar bandh NEET paper leak police suspension

On 25 July 2026, during a statewide Bihar bandh protesting the NEET‑UG exam paper leak that affected more than two million students, a police constable identified as Abhishek Patel fired an AK‑47 assault rifle into the air while surrounded by demonstrators in Siwan, Bihar. The officer was part of a district intelligence unit and had no orders to use the weapon.

The incident was captured on video that went viral on social media. Senior Bihar police official Nilesh Kumar said no protester was killed; three students, including a 15‑year‑old named Md Arif, suffered injuries. In response, the constable was suspended with immediate effect by the Bihar Police Headquarters and a departmental inquiry was launched. The firing sparked political backlash, with opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav demanding accountability for senior police officials and the home minister. The protests themselves contributed to the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Across the state, more than 450 people were arrested and 21 FIRs filed as authorities continued a crackdown on the unrest.
