Six detained after clashes with police outside Portugal's parliament
Six people were detained following confrontations with police in front of the Assembly of the Republic in Lisbon during a CGTP‑organized general strike. Five remain in custody, accused of resisting and coercing public officials, while a sixth, released pending a court summons, faced a charge of property damage.
Police reported that the disturbances involved youths throwing bottles, igniting garbage bins and attempting to block traffic after the main demonstration ended. The government condemned the “unacceptable behaviour of some” participants, stressed respect for the right to strike, and expressed confidence in the police response. All detainees are scheduled to appear before the Court of Justice in Lisbon on Friday.
