Six family members killed in Olanchito massacre, Honduras

Six members of a single family were shot dead in an armed attack on the night of 4 August in the Murillo Soto neighbourhood of Olanchito, Yoro Department, Honduras. Police initially reported four fatalities; two injured victims later died in hospital, bringing the death toll to six. The victims were identified as Santos Giovanni Díaz, Daylin Bonilla, Denis Manuel Meléndez Becerra, Francisco Enrique Díaz, Carlos Manuel Díaz Duarte and Brian Wilfredo Salgado Ruiz.

Police commissioner Lorenzo Lara said the investigation points to a dispute linked to micro‑drug trafficking and motorcycle theft, activities allegedly connected to three of the victims. The house had been raided several times in previous years for drug‑sale and theft complaints. Investigators recovered 9 mm cartridge cases at the scene for forensic analysis. The massacre raises Honduras' recorded killings to 22 this year, with a total of 97 people killed in similar incidents in 2026.
