Six Flags Over Georgia reopens after fatal Goliath roller coaster incident

Six Flags Over Georgia is reopening as scheduled on Friday, October 16, 2026, following a fatal incident on the Goliath roller coaster. On Monday, October 12, 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, an Atlanta educator, was ejected from the ride. Witnesses reported he may have fainted before a safety latch came loose, causing him to be thrown from the coaster. The incident also resulted in injuries to four other parkgoers, including children.

In response to the tragedy, Six Flags has temporarily closed approximately 12 roller coasters across North America, including attractions at Kings Island, Sea World Orlando, and La Ronde in Montreal. Many of these closed rides, such as Orion and Diamondback, were manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard and utilize similar restraint systems.

Investigations are currently being conducted by the Cobb County Police Department and the Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. While the Goliath coaster had passed its annual inspection in March 2026 with zero violations, authorities are examining mechanical failures, restraint integrity, and potential operator error. Bolliger & Mabillard is also conducting an active investigation into the incident.
