Six Flags Over Georgia to reopen following fatal roller coaster incident
Six Flags Over Georgia is scheduled to reopen this Friday following a fatal incident on the Goliath roller coaster. On October 12, 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem was ejected from the ride, striking other passengers before falling. Kariem was later pronounced dead.
Cobb County Police confirmed that four children were also injured during the incident. All four juveniles were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The Goliath coaster is not expected to be operational during the park's reopening.
While the ride passed its most recent annual state inspection in March with no violations, witnesses reported concerns regarding the coaster's restraints. The Cobb County Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident, and local officials are awaiting findings from state investigators before determining if criminal charges are warranted. Six Flags president Richard Pretlow expressed condolences to the family and reiterated the park's commitment to safety.
