Six Flags to install seat belts on roller coasters following fatal accident

Six Flags Entertainment Corporation has announced it will install seat belts on the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia and other rides with similar restraint systems. The decision follows a fatal incident on October 12, 2026, in which 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem was ejected from the Goliath coaster and fell to his death.

In response to the accident, the company has temporarily closed eight additional roller coasters across five parks in the United States and Canada. These nine closed attractions were all manufactured by the Swiss firm Bolliger & Mabillard and utilize similar clamshell-style lap restraints. While Six Flags has not specified a reopening timeline, the company stated the closures were taken out of an abundance of caution.

CEO John Reilly confirmed that Six Flags has engaged independent engineers and ride inspection specialists to conduct a comprehensive review of safety procedures across its entire portfolio of attractions. The Goliath coaster remains shut down as state and local officials, including the Cobb County Police Department and the Georgia Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire, continue their investigation into the cause of the ejection.
