Six Highlanders FC fans killed in road accident near Filabusi

Six supporters of the Highlanders Football Club were killed in a road accident on Sunday, August 23, while returning home from a match at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo. The accident occurred near Filabusi on the Masvingo–Mbalabala Road.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, a Nissan NV350 carrying passengers crashed into a stationary, unoccupied Howo tipper truck. A Honda Fit following closely behind subsequently struck the rear of the Nissan. All six occupants in the Nissan died at the scene. Three occupants of the Honda Fit sustained serious injuries.

Highlanders FC issued a statement expressing profound sadness, noting that the victims were part of the club’s ‘100-year family.’ The club extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. Several victims were admitted to Filabusi Hospital, while one remains in critical condition at United Bulawayo Hospitals.
