Six years after Salka Bukvarević’s death, Bosnia honors Tuzla cultural centre founder

On 29 July 2020, Salka Bukvarević, the first director of the Bosnian Cultural Center of Tuzla Canton and later federal minister for veterans and disabled, died at age 53 in Sarajevo. Bukvarević, born in 1967 in Gornji Hrasno near Kalesija, earned his degree, master’s and doctorate at the University of Tuzla and served as a professor in the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Civil Engineering.

From 1998 to 2007 he led the newly‑established cultural centre, shaping its programs and infrastructure, and later participated in the canton’s assembly, advised on investments for Elektroprivreda BiH, and contributed to the drafting of the Tuzla Canton Constitution. His wartime activities included organizing resistance in Tuzla and membership in the Patriotic League. The six‑year anniversary commemorates his impact on culture, education, and veteran affairs in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
