SJD Pediatric Cancer Center provides specialized care in Barcelona

The SJD Pediatric Cancer Center in Barcelona, part of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, serves as a major European hub for pediatric oncology. Opened in 2022, the 14,000-square-meter facility integrates outpatient consultations, inpatient care, and medical research under one roof to streamline treatment for up to 400 new patients annually.

The center features 37 individual rooms, eight transplant chambers, 26 day-hospital stations, and 21 consultation rooms, alongside specialized laboratories, nuclear medicine, and an oncology pharmacy. Its design emphasizes natural light and communal spaces for families, developed in collaboration with patients. Approximately 70% of the space is dedicated to clinical care, while 30% is reserved for research aimed at developing more precise and less invasive treatments.

Financing for the project was secured through significant philanthropic efforts, including 30 million euros for construction and 7 million euros for equipment. Contributions came from 15 founding donors, hundreds of companies, and over 100,000 individuals. Notable support included a joint contribution from the Leo Messi Foundation and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
