SK Eternix launches fuel cell power plants in Icheon and Paju
SK Eternix has commenced commercial operations of fuel cell power plants in Icheon and Paju to address rising electricity demand in the Seoul metropolitan area. The project, which involves a total investment of approximately 159.4 billion won, establishes a 28MW distributed power cluster consisting of Icheon Eco Park, Paju Eco Park 1, and Paju Eco Park 2.
The facilities utilize high-efficiency solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) from Bloom Energy. Once all three sites are fully operational—with Paju Eco Park 2 expected to begin service in November—the cluster will produce an annual output of approximately 222GWh, enough to power roughly 53,000 households for a year.
This initiative aims to secure distributed energy sources in regions anticipating high demand from semiconductor clusters and AI data centers (AIDC). By locating generation facilities near demand centers, the project reduces reliance on long-distance power transmission. SK Eternix plans to expand its role as a comprehensive energy solution provider by integrating fuel cells with solar, wind, and energy storage systems (ESS).
